Lab History

Hi I’m Elena, and the following is written almost entirely from memory. If you find any inaccuracies please let me know.

The voice of the lab is mainly a combination of the Spring staffs from all 3 years: Eric Xiao, Michael Peng, Elena Tomson and their teams.

  1. Before CSE 29 was first thought of, there was a class called CSE 15L. The iteration that I (Elena) took it was Winter 2022 (CSE15L WI22 website) and that is the quarter that 29 was based on most strongly when 29 labs were written for the first time in Spring 2024.
  2. Spring 2024 Labs were written by our original Lab TA with the help of his tutor team who are as follows:
  3. Fall 2024 Labs is the quarter I did not do lab dev as only TAs did lab dev. They did not use much of what had been created in Spring but you may find a few pieces (like pokemail) from Spring. As my recollection and a brief look at who made the commits to the labs in the github the main lab authors are as follows:
    • TAs Janet Vorobyeva and Yash Garde
  4. Winter 2025 Labs upon the return of Gerald came the return of the Gerald labs, ie Spring ‘24 labs. We updated the labs from SP24 a bit, making room for the practice skill demos and review quizzes that were now to take place during lab. Bits of Fall can likely be found sprinkled about. These are written / updated by:
  5. Spring 2025 Labs changed very little from winter, a few reworded things here and there as well as moving the ssh key setup to ieng6 way further up than week 7. (no, we don’t have a good reason why we had it all the way in week7) Our team this quarter was:
  6. Summer 2025 Labs were a little different. By a little I mean we don’t talk about this quarter. Turns out doing everything remotely in 5 weeks isn’t a great idea, who knew? – in sum it was 4 hour zoom lab using mainly a google doc. There were 17 special in-person students where it was much better but still not the same as the regular 10 x 2 hour labs. I do not recall precisely how much we pulled from each prior quarter for these but I’m positive that these were not refered to in the future labs.
    • Lab TA: Joey Wu
    • Tutor: Elena Tomson
  7. Fall 2025 Labs saw a shift to severely reduced staff and the introduction of whiteboards. Lab was shifted to a demo-task-demo-task format where a TA would demo something and the students would do a very similar task using what they just learned. This time we had 4 TAs, each week 2 of which were in charge of writing lab.
    • TAs: Elena Tomson, Andrew Pan, Janet Vorobyeva, and Rachel Lim
  8. Winter 2026 Labs saw mild updates from falls labs, polishing them and their demos. The lab team for this quarter:
    • TAs: Elena Tomson and Shaurya Raswan
    • Tutor: Brendan Barber
  9. Spring 2026 Labs built off of Spring ‘25 almost entirely, with the introduction of whiteboards, with a few warmup activities pulled from Winter ‘26. Lab 9 based off of a 15L lab from it’s last iteration, all others based on SP25.
  10. Fall 2026
    • Team remains to be seen :)
